Join us for an evening of fun, friendship, and inspiration! Come to the 1st annual Champions Awards Reception where we'll be celebrating Champions of Inclusion Amanda Lukoff, Lex Gillette, and Dr. Lee & Elaine Marcus. For these individuals, inclusion is a way of life. They are raising awareness of what it means to be inclusive and laying the foundation for the achievements of those that follow.
Along with these amazing honorees, we'll be recognizing our NIP Accreditation pilot programs who have spent the year helping us perfect the program and get it ready for launch next year.
We'll have a dessert buffet and a cash bar (bring your ID!). Each guest will receive one complimentary drink ticket. And let's get out of the camp gear and get a little dressy casual for our attire.
It's a night you won't want to miss!
*Thanks to our sponsors and supporters, this event is free to the public.*
THE AWARD WINNERS
Filmmaker Amanda Lukoff grew up advocating for her sister Gabrielle, especially whenever she heard the word retard(ed). With her new film The R-Word, she unravels the history and lasting effects of this word through the lens of the sibling experience, captivating animation sequences, and self-advocates speaking truth-to-power – ultimately making the case for why the conversation surrounding people with intellectual and developmental disabilities needs to change.
After working for many years in communications-related positions in the non-profit & private sector, Amanda and her husband founded Thorough Productions, a full-service production company based out of the DC metro area with a special focus on marginalized communities.
Lex Gillette is a globally recognized Paralympic track and field athlete for Team USA. He has amassed four Paralympic medals, three world champion titles, and he is the only totally blind athlete on the planet to eclipse the 22-foot barrier in the long jump. He is currently training for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Off of the field of play, Lex devotes his time to positively enhancing the lives of children nationwide. He serves as an athlete mentor for Classroom Champions, an organization that pairs Olympians, Paralympians and professional athletes to K-8 students of schools in underserved areas within the United States and abroad.
